Info: We begin the practice all together with an hour interactive Talk Through and then 2,5h Underscore – joining the GUS as a modified (shorter) Practice. We do believe a jam is as safe space as we create it. Being aware of that, reminding everyone to take care of ourselves and each other, we can create more sensitivity.
We ask for registration before due to the space limited capacity. So, regarding the next qüestion, YES, we are open to others to join when they register or if they don´t register, if there´s still availability. More information will be posted in the venue´s website and in our private ones.
History: Contact Improvisation arrived in Berlin in the 1980s and quickly became a cornerstone of the city’s vibrant improvisational dance community. Tanzfabrik Berlin, one of Europe’s leading contemporary dance centers shortly after its founding in 1978, has been instrumental in nurturing this practice, hosting weekly Contact Improvisation jams, Global Underscore sessions, and international workshops.

History: We have a very large weekly jam. The underscore is practiced in short spurts, intermittently. We don’t have a robust Underscore practice.

History: We are excited to dance at the Florence Community Center (FCC) where Nancy Stark Smith held the January Workshop many moons ago before she moved it to Earthdance. The Global Underscore was essentially conceived at FCC (and Earthdance) by Claire Filmon when she took the January Workshop in 2000! One side of the studio is mostly glass letting in a lot of light. Also there are doors to the outside so we can extend our dancing to the lawn.
Florence/Northampton Massachusetts USA has been a central place for Underscore and CI because Nancy Stark Smith lived here and started Contact Quarterly here (with Lisa Nelson) in the 1970’s. Earthdance, a center for CI and other related work, started nearby in Plainfield in 1987 because of Nancy and CI being here. Acappella Motion workshop, Nancy’s January Workshop, a local GUS site, and countless other CI classes and workshops has been held in this area for decades. Nancy led seasonal Underscores here, which Patrick Crowley and Sarah Young host now.
