History: Have been dancing CI since over 17 years now, currently teaching sometimes at the Movement Lab in Vienna (with Juli Gabor, Matan Levkovich), will teach at Contact in Paradise this year in May. In terms of Underscore, I have done those over the years, sometimes liking it, sometimes experiencing it as a bit restricting; currently I enjoy the Underscore a lot as a frame that “”allows”” breaking usual patterns in jams (ie.: couple couple couple) and to allow non-contact-ish influence (even if CI is my primary focus). I’ve also talked with Malcolm Manning quite a lot about the Underscore – he is also based in Vienna but unfortunately not here on the 20th; he worked with Nancy a lot.
Other Info: I build a small site for this event. It is open source here: github.com/mennowo/GlobalUnderscoreSiteSite . It is easy to deploy via Docker, and you can edit the content in the browser, and see/export signups. Maybe other sites can benefit from this. I am happy to spin up some instances of the site if there is a wish for this.

Info: We begin the practice all together with an hour interactive Talk Through and then a Full Score Practice. We do believe a jam is as safe space as we create it. Being aware of that, reminding everyone to take care of ourselves and each other, we can create more sensitivity.

History: Contact Improvisation arrived in Berlin in the 1980s and quickly became a cornerstone of the city’s vibrant improvisational dance community. Tanzfabrik Berlin, one of Europe’s leading contemporary dance centers shortly after its founding in 1978, has been instrumental in nurturing this practice, hosting weekly Contact Improvisation jams, Global Underscore sessions, and international workshops.

History: We have experienced the Underscore in different settings and with different facilitators, and feel drawn to engage with it more deeply — with respect for the people who created, carried, and transmitted it over time. We do not see ourselves as “elders” or long-term carriers of the tradition, but as practitioners who want to study it by hosting and taking part. We are rooted as CI facilitators in the Rhineland, where a lively Contact Improvisation ecosystem has grown across several cities, yet there is currently no registered site to participate in this global phenomenon. We would like to make this participation possible while contributing to the continuation and evolution of the form in our local context.

History: The Global Underscore was essentially conceived in Florence, MA USA and Earthdance by Claire Filmon when she took the January Workshop in 2000! Florence/Northampton Massachusetts USA has been a central place for Underscore and CI because Nancy Stark Smith lived here and started Contact Quarterly here (with Lisa Nelson) in the 1970’s. Earthdance, a center for CI and other related work, started nearby in Plainfield in 1987 because of Nancy and CI being here. Acappella Motion workshop, Nancy’s January Workshop, a local GUS site, and countless other CI classes and workshops has been held in this area for decades. Nancy led seasonal Underscores here, which Patrick Crowley and Sarah Young host now. Nancy started the Underscore +/- Group in 2010 as a weekly peer workgroup and was a regular member until her death in 2020 — the group continues with 20 dancers!

We will begin with an introduction to the principles of the practice, the jam agreements, and the structure of the Underscore. History: Contact Improvisation has been practiced in our region for many years through regular classes, jams, workshops, and festivals. Our local community has grown around these ongoing activities, bringing together people interested in movement, improvisation, embodiment, and collective practices. Info & History: Essa atividade faz parte do projeto “”Tatear – Preencher a dança de memória””, do Núcleo Improvisação em Contato, contemplado pela 38ª edição do Programa de Fomento à Dança para a cidade de São Paulo. É a segunda vez que realizamos um Global Underscore através de um projeto contemplado pelo Fomento à Dança, além de toda nossa história enquanto grupo realizando diversos outros projeto com apoio de editais ou de maneira independente.
Durante nossos projetos, realizamos muitas atividades voltadas para a prática do Contato Improvisação, possibilitando que mais pessoas conheçam essa forma de dança e de alguma maneira fomentando a continuidade do C.I. na cidade de SP, além do trabalho de formação de público.
Ricardo Neves é um dos responsáveis por conduzir essa prática todos os anos na cidade de SP desde 2009, promovendo o encontro de pessoas interessadas nesse dia especial em diferentes espaços da cidade. Participou de cursos com Steve Paxton, Lisa Nelson e posteriormente com o fechamento do Estúdio, Ricardo seguiu organizando Jams pela cidade e produzindo eventos de maneira independente. Além de todo seu estudo profundo no C.I. com a bailarina e professora Tica Lemos. Foi um dos responsáveis por iniciar o Encontro Internacional de Contato Improvisação em SP e no Litoral, trazendo diversos professores de C.I. como Nita Little, Cristina Turdo, Anjelika Doniy, Javiera Sanhueza, Gustavo Lecce, entre outras pessoas referências nessa prática mantendo os estudos contínuos e aprimorando a linguagem.

History: We have been practicing contact improvisation for 10 years in Santiago and Valparaíso. We currently live in Temuco, in southern Chile, and run a space for dance and stage experimentation, where we have been offering contact improvisation classes and jams since last year. On this occasion, we are joined by Javiera Sanhueza, a leading figure in contact improvisation in our country, with whom we will activate GUS. We are committed to creating and strengthening a connected contact improvisation community in southern Chile.

Info: The details will be communicated in instagram and by a mailing list. In specific about Underscore, we facilitate few practices the week before to introduce in the collective knowledge of the glifos (glyphs), looking for complicity, participation, joy and commitment with the presence in the Global Underscore day. Sala Santo Domingo is a place to safety practice, and is a place that offer weekly C.I. practices facilitated by Rocío Rivera Marchevsky and Cristian Reyes Montes, and JAMS. Also the organizers of the En_práctica C.I. festival make frequently calls for the place, so there is a community around.
History: Since 2018, Colectivo En Práctica has organized festivals, workshops, and the Jamarada (a 3-day event with 8-hour daily jams), contributing to the visibility and depth of the practice. The collective is currently composed of Daniela Villanueva Tolosa, Cristián Reyes Montes, and Rocío Rivera Marchevsky. The founding members were too Bárbara Trejo Cruz and Consuelo Pacheco. This is the first time we are registering the Underscore as a collective.
I (Rocío Rivera Marchevsky) have coordinated several Global Underscore events. As part of the Contact Improvisation (C.I.) community in Chile, we participate in various initiatives centered around the practice to support its transmission and “”pollination”” within our social and artistic environments. I have sustained public research and C.I. practice in the city since 2002, establishing TEJIDOS PERCEPTIBLES, a weekly space for the practice, for over 10 years. For the last two years, this practice has been co-guided with Cristián Reyes Montes, merging our inquiries, interests, and research.

History: I’ve been practicing contact improvisation for the past 2 years or so, and have had the opportunity to share this practice with different communities, both in my country and in Puerto Rico. I have yet to find a space where they host the Global Underscore, and decided my self sustained initiative for the exploration of movement and artistic performance (CNML) was the perfect intermediary to bring this global practice to my city. I know locally there are other two groups that dedicate themselves to CI, but am unaware if they’re participating or not.
